Seoul: South Korea plans to invest 22.5 billion won (US$14.7 million) until 2029 to develop artificial intelligence (AI) models tailored for research and development (R and D), the science ministry said Thursday. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to enhance R and D efficiency across key strategic sectors through the use of AI technologies.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT has outlined a comprehensive plan to inject funds into six AI model development projects. These projects will focus on major strategic sectors, including bio, chemicals, and energy, with each being led by an AI expert alongside a specialist from the respective field.
The government will also supply essential infrastructure, such as graphic processing units (GPUs), to facilitate the development of these AI models. Additionally, the ministry has committed to making the models and associated data publicly accessible via an open platform, supporting transparency and collaboration.
The ministry emphasized its commitment to fostering AI integration into R and D, aiming to accelerate scientific discovery and innovation through this strategic investment.
