According to Yonhap News Agency, in 1899, the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's last kingdom, signed a trade treaty with China's Qing Dynasty, marking a significant moment in Korea's trade history. Fast forward to 1945, the operation of a railway line connecting Seoul and Sinuiju was halted amid rising tensions between the political forces in the southern and northern parts of the Korean Peninsula, a precursor to the eventual political division and establishment of separate governments in 1948.
In 1962 and 1970, South Korea established diplomatic ties with Costa Rica and Tonga, respectively, highlighting the nation's growing international presence. The year 1996 saw a milestone as South Korea and Brazil held their first summit meeting in Brasilia, where President Kim Young-sam and Brazilian leader Fernando Cardoso agreed on expanding bilateral trade and signed memorandums of understanding on tourism cooperation and multiple visa issuance.

Most recently, in 2025, a total of 316 South Korean workers were released after being detained for a week following a U.S. immigration raid in Georgia.
