Goyang: South Korea has reported its second confirmed case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) this season at a local farm, approximately three weeks following the first case in Incheon, just west of Seoul, authorities announced.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the recent case surfaced at a beef cattle farm in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, as reported by the government's central headquarters for FMD response. FMD is an acute, infectious viral disease affecting cows, pigs, goats, and other cloven-hoofed animals, though it poses no risk to humans.

To prevent further spread, the government has dispatched quarantine and epidemiologic experts to the affected farm. In compliance with standard procedures, 133 cows on the farm will be culled. A 24-hour standstill order has also been issued for workers and vehicles accessing farms and livestock-related facilities in areas near Goyang, including Seoul.

Additionally, the government plans to conduct emergency vaccinations and clinical tests on approximately 200,000 animals across 1,092 farms in Goyang, Paju, Yangju, and Seoul.
