South Korea and U.S. Hold Talks on Democracy and Human Rights

Washington:Seoul: South Korea and the United States convened for their regular discussions this week, focusing on democratic governance and human rights enhancement, as stated by Seoul's foreign ministry on Wednesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the sixth Korea-U.S. Democracy and Governance Consultation took place in Washington, D.C., on Monday. The agenda included a comprehensive discussion on human rights and democracy-related issues, as well as the influence of digital technology on freedom of expression.

The discussions also addressed efforts to combat human trafficking and measures to protect and support victims.

The consultation was jointly chaired by Choi Won-seok, director-general of South Korea's International Organizations and Nuclear Affairs Bureau, and Julie Turner, acting deputy assistant secretary of state for the U.S. Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.

The ministry emphasized that South Korea and the U.S. are committed to continuing their collaboration and communication in the realms of democracy and human rights through this consultation mechanism.

This bilateral consultative body was established following a summit in May 2021 to advance discussions on promoting democracy and human rights and explore cooperation in these domains.
