South Korea and Taiwan Close Diplomatic Missions Following Shift in Recognition

Seoul: South Korea and Taiwan have officially closed their diplomatic missions in each other's capitals as South Korea formally shifted its diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China. This move marked a significant change in the diplomatic landscape for the region.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the closure in 1992 followed South Korea's decision to establish formal diplomatic relations with China, reflecting the increasing global recognition of China's growing influence. The shift in diplomatic relations was seen as a strategic move by South Korea to align with the economic and geopolitical power of China.

In 2002, North Korean athletes traveled to Busan, South Korea's largest port city, to participate in the 14th Asian Games, showcasing a rare moment of sports diplomacy amidst ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula.

In a meeting held on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York in 2010, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Chinese President Hu Jintao discussed potential strategies for resuming denuclearization talks with North Korea. The discussions were part of a broader effort to address Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

In 2011, South Korea was reelected to the executive board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during the general conference in Vienna, Austria. The election saw eleven board seats contested, with Cuba, Mexico, and Italy among the newly elected members.

A 2020 incident involved a 47-year-old South Korean fisheries official who disappeared while on duty aboard an inspection boat near the western border island of Yeonpyeong. Investigations were launched amid intelligence reports suggesting the official may have ended up in North Korean waters.

In 2022, the USS Ronald Reagan, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, arrived in Busan for its first joint drills with the South Korean Navy near the peninsula in five years. This deployment was part of coordinated efforts by Seoul and Washington to strengthen deterrence against North Korean military threats.
