Washington: U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reiterated the need Friday for Asian and European allies to play a role in securing the crucial Strait of Hormuz, saying "the time for free riding is over." Hegseth made the remarks during a press briefing at the Pentagon, underscoring that the ongoing U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports and vessels is "growing and going global," and that the blockade will last "as long as it takes." According to Yonhap News Agency, Hegseth emphasized that Europe and Asia have long benefited from U.S. protection, but now it is imperative for them to contribute actively. He stressed that the U.S. efforts in the Strait of Hormuz should not be America's responsibility alone. Hegseth called for allies who are capable, loyal, and understand the mutual obligations of alliance partnerships. The Pentagon chief highlighted the significance of the Strait of Hormuz for Europe, particularly for energy imports, noting that Europe requires safe passage through the strait more than the Unit ed States does. He urged European allies to take concrete actions, such as sending warships to support the U.S. blockade or escort merchant vessels through the perilous waterway, which is at risk of Iranian attacks. Hegseth detailed the expanding scope of the maritime blockade initiated by the U.S. Navy on April 13, aimed at pressuring Tehran to negotiate an end to hostilities with the United States. He described the U.S. military operation against Iran as a mission of global importance, designed to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities. The Defense Secretary also mentioned recent successes of the operation, including the turning around of 34 ships, some of which were Iranian, and the seizure of two Iranian "dark fleet" ships in the Indo-Pacific region. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine reported that the Islamic Republic has attacked five merchant vessels and seized two attempting to transit the Strait. Hegseth further criticized Iran's military actions, characterizing them as akin t o piracy and terrorism on the high seas, and challenged Iran to engage in serious negotiations, asserting that the U.S. is prepared for any outcome.
