Seoul: South Korea and Bhutan have officially established diplomatic relations, marking a significant milestone in the diplomatic history of both nations.
According to Yonhap News Agency, this establishment of diplomatic ties occurred in 1987, paving the way for potential collaborations and strengthened bilateral relationships between the two countries. This development is part of South Korea's broader diplomatic efforts to build and maintain peaceful and cooperative relations with countries across the globe.
In the years following 1987, South Korea continued to make significant strides on the international stage. In 1991, President Roh Tae-woo delivered a notable speech at the United Nations, further emphasizing South Korea's active role in global affairs.
The 1990s also witnessed complex international challenges, such as the arrest of Robert Kim in 1996. Kim, a U.S. Navy officer and naturalized American citizen, was detained by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation for allegedly passing classified information on North Korea to South Korean diplomats. He was convicted in 1997 and served over seven years in prison.
The dawn of the new millennium saw promising developments on the Korean Peninsula. In 2000, the two Koreas held their first-ever defense ministry-level talks in Seoul. This was followed by the opening of a military hotline in 2002, the first of its kind since the Korean War ended in 1953, aimed at reducing tensions and fostering communication.
However, tensions have also remained a critical issue. In 2016, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho declared intentions to enhance the country's nuclear capabilities in response to perceived threats from the United States. This statement underscored the ongoing volatility in the region.
In 2017, the U.S. demonstrated its military readiness with a show of force involving B-1B Lancer bombers and F-15C fighters flying off North Korea's eastern coast. This action was intended to convey the United States' capability to address potential threats from North Korea.
More recently, in 2020, the South Korean defense ministry reported a tragic incident wherein a South Korean fisheries ministry official was shot and killed by North Korean forces at sea. The official's body was subsequently set on fire, a development that further strained inter-Korean relations.
These events highlight the ongoing complexities and developments in Korean and international diplomacy, with South Korea continuing to navigate its role on the global stage.
