St. louis: Son Heung-min has stretched his scoring streak to four matches with a brace for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC). Son netted LAFC's second and third goals in their 3-0 win over St. Louis City SC in Major League Soccer (MLS) at Energizer Park in St. Louis on Saturday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Son now has eight goals in as many matches since joining the MLS club last month. Seven of those goals have come in the last four contests. Son's sidekick up front, Denis Bouanga, opened the scoring for the visiting side in the 15th minute. Then during first-half stoppage time, Son took a feed from Artem Smolyakov, drove into the box and fired a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.
Defender Timo Baumgartl failed to apply enough pressure on the South Korean attacker, who capitalized on all the space in front of him to extend his scoring streak. It was the 16th consecutive LAFC goal scored by either Son or Bouanga, who have had three hat tricks between them over the past three matches.
Son then made it 17 in a row for the duo just before the clock hit the hour mark. After receiving a pass from Smolyakov at the center of the box, Son found just enough seam past midfielder Alfredo Morales and unleashed a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Roman Burki, who was left shaking his head.
LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo said afterward it has taken "a team effort" to allow Son and Bouanga to score all those goals. "I just think those are two really good players, and then the other eight players on the field are doing a great job of putting them in positions to succeed," Cherundolo said. "Those are the guys finishing plays at the moment, but the amount of work that goes into those plays by everybody is wonderful to watch, and it truly is a team accomplishment."
Asked if LAFC are too dependent on their two strikers, Cherundolo said, "I don't think that's the case." The coach then reeled off the names of Sergi Palencia, Mark Delgado, Nkosi Tafari, Ryan Hollingshead, and Smolyakov as those who have had opportunities in recent matches.
For St. Louis, South Korean forward Jeong Sang-bin got the start and received a yellow card in the third minute after crashing into LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. The French keeper played the rest of the first half but was replaced by Thomas Hasal at the start of the second half.
Cherundolo spoke highly of Jeong and called him "an electrifying player." "He's a great player. It can be very difficult to defend in open space," the LAFC coach said. "I think our guys did a good job of either getting pressure on the ball, which really negates any sort of verticality from the opponent, or taking the depth away immediately."
Cherundolo also said he was heartened to see Jeong and Son share some moments together after the match. "It was good to see those two in the locker room after the game, connecting and talking and enjoying each other's company," he said. "So we'd love to see more of that, more Korean duels or battles or derbies."
