Among the notable occurrences, in 1951, over 700 villagers were tragically killed by Army soldiers in Geochang, South Gyeongsang Province. The soldiers mistakenly suspected the villagers of collaborating with North Korean guerrillas, leading to a devastating loss of life.
According to Yonhap News Agency, diplomatic relations between South Korea and Ukraine were established in 1992, marking a significant milestone in international relations. In 2005, North Korea declared its refusal to participate in future six-way talks concerning its nuclear arms program unless the United States altered its "hostile" policy toward the communist state.
In 2008, Seoul's historic Namdaemun gate was destroyed by a fire. The landmark, officially known as Sungnyemun, served as the southern gate of an ancient wall around Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty. A 70-year-old man was later found guilty of setting the fire, resulting in the destruction of South Korea's No. 1 national treasure.
Further, South Korea's decision to shut down the Kaesong Industrial Complex in 2016 was a response to North Korea's nuclear test and long-range rocket launch.
