A series of pivotal events in Korean history have shaped the nation's political and diplomatic landscape over the years.
According to Yonhap News Agency, on April 19, 1960, a group of college professors publicly accused President Rhee Syng-man's government of using police force against pro-democracy student protesters. This accusation followed a violent clash where several hundred students were killed or injured, triggering nationwide protests that eventually forced President Rhee to resign and flee to Hawaii.
In 1965, South Korea took a significant step in international diplomacy by establishing diplomatic relations with Bolivia. This was followed by the establishment of international phone services with the Soviet Union in 1979, marking another milestone in South Korea's global communication network.
The year 1989 saw the sentencing of Kim Hyun-hee, a self-confessed North Korean agent, by a Seoul court. She was convicted of b ombing a Korean Air Lines jetliner near Myanmar, resulting in the death of all 115 passengers. Although initially sentenced to death, her sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment, and she was eventually granted amnesty on the grounds that she was manipulated by the North Korean regime.
In 2007, North Korean leader Kim Jong-il marked the 75th anniversary of the country's armed forces by inspecting a large military parade in Pyongyang. Two years later, in 2009, North Korea announced the resumption of plutonium extraction from its nuclear facility, following U.N. sanctions targeting North Korean firms with suspected missile and nuclear program ties.
The sinking of the Cheonan naval patrol ship in 2010 was attributed to a "non-contact external explosion" by a joint military and civilian investigation team. This conclusion came after examining the wreckage near the western sea border with North Korea.
In 2014, a Seoul appeals court acquitted political d efector Yoo Woo-seong of espionage charges, revealing that Seoul's intelligence agency had fabricated evidence against him. Yoo, a former Chinese national, became embroiled in a high-profile forgery case that brought scrutiny to intelligence operations.
Finally, in 2019, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un initiated his first summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Vladivostok, seeking to strengthen ties with Moscow amid stalled negotiations with the United States. In 2022, North Korea commemorated the 90th anniversary of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army with a military parade in Pyongyang, celebrating the anti-Japanese guerilla force founded by Kim Il-sung in 1932.
