Seoul: Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin expressed his apologies on Tuesday regarding a contentious promotional campaign by Starbucks Korea, which stirred public outrage by invoking memories of the 1980 Gwangju pro-democracy movement's violent suppression.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Chung addressed the press in southern Seoul, expressing his contrition for the distress caused by the marketing misstep. "I take very seriously the fact that many people have felt deep pain and anger due to Starbucks Korea's inappropriate marketing," he stated. Chung offered a heartfelt apology, seeking forgiveness from those affected.
Chung committed to taking full accountability for the incident, acknowledging the pain it may have caused to the families of the uprising victims and the Gwangju community. He emphasized a collective hope to create a better Republic of Korea for future generations.
To restore public trust, Chung announced plans to thoroughly review Shinsegae's internal systems and risk management protocols, alongside elevating the group's social responsibility standards. He assured that Shinsegae group members would strive to improve, adopt a humble approach, and take their duties more earnestly.
The apology followed a wave of controversy despite a previous statement from Chung, after Starbucks Korea, operated by Shinsegae affiliate E-Mart, initiated an online "Tank Day" campaign coinciding with the May 18 Gwangju uprising anniversary. This marks Chung's first formal public apology since assuming his position in March 2024.
