Seoul: Operations of more than 120 KTX high-speed trains have been suspended or undergone route changes after the partial collapse of an overpass near Seoul Station earlier this week, the state-run rail operator said Wednesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Seosomun Overpass, which was undergoing demolition in Seoul's western ward of Seodaemun, partially collapsed on Tuesday. The unfortunate incident resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to three others. The collapse caused debris to fall on power lines used by the railway between Seoul Station and Sinchon Station, leading to the suspension of KTX services between Seoul Station and Haengsin Station in Goyang, located north of Seoul. Additionally, it halted services on the Gyeongui Line between Seoul Station and Susaek Station in northwestern Seoul.

Due to the incident, more than 120 KTX trains on several lines, including the Gyeongbu Line, Honam Line, Gyeongjeon Line, Donghae Line, and Jeolla Line, have either been suspended or have had their routes changed. In an effort to alleviate crowding at Seoul Station, KORAIL plans to operate Mugunghwa trains on specific sections, such as between the central city of Daejeon and Busan, along with other route modifications.

KORAIL stated that the decision to resume normal operations will be made after conducting rail and other inspections following the completion of recovery work at the collapse site by city authorities.
