Seoul Stocks Extend Gains for Fourth Session on Semiconductor Surge

Seoul:South Korean shares continued to rise for the fourth consecutive session as major semiconductor stocks saw increased investor interest, influenced by the Nasdaq Composite's consecutive record highs.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) climbed 63.01 points, or 1.21 percent, closing at 7,080.92 by the end of the regular trading session.

The KOSPI opened nearly 2 percent higher but later saw some gains trimmed as foreign and individual investors sold off tech giants to secure profits. This followed a mixed performance in U.S. stocks on Tuesday, where the Nasdaq Composite achieved a 0.45 percent uptick to another record close, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 fell by 0.36 percent and 0.06 percent, respectively.

Investor sentiment was bolstered by the ongoing rally in stocks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and hopes for reduced tensions between the United States and Iran. Efforts to resolve the Middle East standoff contributed to a decrease in global oil prices.
