Seoul: South Korean stocks opened lower Friday on losses from tech and shipbuilding shares. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 21.51 points, or 0.54 percent, to 3,965.4 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the U.S. stock market was closed for the Thanksgiving Day holiday, which may have impacted trading volumes in Seoul. In the tech sector, Samsung Electronics experienced a decrease of 1.55 percent, while its competitor SK hynix saw a decline of 0.92 percent.
In the shipbuilding industry, HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering fell by 1.76 percent, and Hanwha Ocean dropped 1.45 percent. The internet sector also saw a decrease, with top company Naver declining by 1.19 percent. Additionally, Hanwha Aerospace, a major player in the defense industry, slipped 0.58 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,462.3 won against the greenback as of 9:15 a.m., which is an increase of 2.6 won from the previous session's close.
