Google’s Gemini 3.0 Shakes Up AI Industry as South Korea Struggles with Strategic Inertia

Seoul: The global artificial intelligence race is witnessing a significant shift with Google's recent unveiling of "Gemini 3.0," threatening the dominance of traditional players like OpenAI and Nvidia.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Google's new model, operating on proprietary Ironwood tensor processing units, has outperformed existing models. This development challenges the previously unchallenged AI landscape dominated by OpenAI's algorithms and Nvidia's chips.

Gemini 3.0 has demonstrated its prowess by scoring 37.5 percent on "Humanity's Last Exam," a test designed to push AI reasoning to its limits, surpassing OpenAI's GPT 5.1 and Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.5. In MathArena Apex, another challenging test of mathematical reasoning, Google's system achieved a remarkable 23.4 percent, far outstripping its competitors, who barely reached 1 percent. This has led even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to admit feeling like an underdog in this rapidly changing arena.

The implications of Google's breakthrough extend beyond just performance metrics. It signals a shift towards vertically integrated AI systems that control both model architecture and custom chips. This shift has influenced market dynamics, affecting share prices of Google parent Alphabet and Nvidia, while also prompting Meta to consider adopting tensor processing units. The era of a single indispensable supplier is fading, opening new opportunities in the AI sector.

The shift towards specialized chips is broadening the market for application-specific designs, particularly in memory, where demand for high-bandwidth memory is robust. Korean semiconductor giants like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix could benefit from this diversification, as their expertise in low-power, high-performance memory is well-positioned to meet the burgeoning demand. Additionally, Big Tech's multifoundry strategy to reduce reliance on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. presents opportunities for Samsung's foundry business.

However, complacency is not an option for South Korean firms. Chinese competitor CXMT has recently introduced advanced LPDDR5X-10667 modules, closing the technological gap with Korean companies to less than a year. As global competitors intensify their efforts, South Korea remains hindered by stringent regulatory constraints, such as the rigid 52-hour workweek, which critics argue stifles competitiveness in fast-paced R and D environments.

Moreover, South Korea's energy policy is outdated, especially when countries like the US, France, and the UK are expanding nuclear capacity to support data center demands. Korean policymakers continue to debate solar power, which lacks the stability needed for the AI-driven future.

The Gemini 3.0 development serves as a stark reminder that no nation or company holds a permanent lead in the AI race. South Korea must act swiftly to secure its position. The National Assembly should prioritize a semiconductor bill that offers R and D flexibility, and the government needs to finalize an energy strategy that aligns with anticipated demand. Industry leaders must innovate in memory and foundry technologies to maintain a competitive edge.

The accelerating global move towards AI will not accommodate delays, and Korea must seize the opportunity for decisive action while it remains available.
