Seoul Plans to Construct Nuclear-Powered Submarine Domestically

Seoul: National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac announced on Thursday that South Korea intends to build a nuclear-powered submarine within its borders. This declaration was made during a parliamentary session where Wi highlighted the country's commitment to advancing its defense capabilities.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Wi Sung-lac addressed recent claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated on his social networking account that he had granted Seoul permission to construct a nuclear-powered submarine at the Philadelphia shipyards in Pennsylvania. Wi countered these claims, describing it as "unrealistic" to invest in facilities at the Philadelphia shipyard for South Korea's submarine construction or to rely on General Dynamics, a U.S. company, for such a project.

Wi emphasized the South Korean government's aim to develop a low-cost, efficient nuclear-powered submarine tailored to the nation's specific defense requirements. This strategic move underscores South Korea's intent to enhance its naval capabilities independently.
