Seoul: The Seoul High Court announced on Thursday its plan to establish two trial divisions next month specifically for insurrection cases, including that of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the decision follows the recent passage of a new bill by the ruling party-led National Assembly, which mandates the creation of trial divisions for handling cases related to insurrection, treason, and mutiny. The new divisions are set to commence on February 23, subsequent to a regular reshuffle of judges on January 30. The court will evaluate the need for additional insurrection divisions based on the performance of the initial two.

The bill stipulates that three veteran judges of equal standing should be appointed to each new trial division. However, a conclusion regarding the specific composition of these divisions was not reached during Thursday's meeting. A further meeting has been scheduled for January 29 to discuss the exact formation of the benches.

Similarly, the Seoul Central District Court will also establish two trial divisions to address comparable cases. The first trial ruling on former President Yoon's insurrection case, linked to his 2024 declaration of martial law, is expected next month. The appellate trial for this case is likely to be overseen by one of the newly formed insurrection divisions.
