Seoul: South Korea will closely coordinate with the United States to ensure that a resumption of dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang leads to tangible progress on the North Korean nuclear issue, Seoul's top security adviser stated.

According to Yonhap News Agency, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac made these remarks at a press briefing amid U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated signals of his intention to rekindle now-dormant diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump's dialogue offer comes at a time when North Korea has significantly advanced its nuclear and missile capabilities, raising concerns that renewed talks could compromise the allies' long-held goal of completely denuclearizing the North.

Wi emphasized the importance of "cooperation with the U.S. in a way that the resumption of North Korea-U.S. dialogue could lead to tangible progress toward the establishment of a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula and resolving the North Korean nuclear issue." He also mentioned plans to build trust between North Korea and the U.S. to support President Trump's efforts to resume dialogue.

In this process, Wi highlighted the necessity of maintaining South Korea's security posture and ensuring that the country is not sidelined from Washington-Pyongyang engagement. He stressed the need for tighter cooperation with Washington to achieve these goals.

Wi also commented on his recent meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Seoul, where the two sides agreed to begin joint preparations for President Lee Jae Myung's attendance at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, in November. They also discussed measures to resume cooperation among South Korea, China, and Japan.
