Senior Diplomats of South Korea, U.S., Japan to Convene in Japan for Strategic Talks

Tokyo: Senior diplomats from South Korea, the United States, and Japan are set to convene in Japan this week for trilateral talks aimed at enhancing cooperation on North Korean issues and economic security. The announcement was made by South Korea's foreign ministry on Wednesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting will include First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo of South Korea, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, and Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Takehiro Funakoshi. The diplomats are scheduled to meet in Japan on Friday, marking the first such meeting since the inauguration of South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump's new administration.

The talks will cover a broad range of topics, including the Korean Peninsula's geopolitical situation, regional dynamics, economic security, technology, energy, and strategies to enhance trilateral cooperation. The South Korean foreign ministry highlighted that these discussions are intended to build upon the agreements reached during the last meeting in Seoul in October, where the nations condemned North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and agreed to bolster security cooperation.

In addition to the trilateral discussions, Park Yoon-joo is expected to hold bilateral talks with his U.S. and Japanese counterparts on the meeting's sidelines, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing mutual concerns.
