Seoul: The Science Media Center Korea (SMCK), an organization aimed at providing the academic community's views on scientific issues to journalists, officially opened Tuesday. The SMCK held its opening ceremony in Seoul, about two months after it was registered as a nonprofit organization in South Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Seoul office is part of the global Science Media Center Network, which now operates in seven countries, including Britain, Spain, Germany, and South Korea. "The center will pursue independent operation, offering fact-based information," SMCK Director Lee Keun-young said during a press conference. Lee elaborated that the center will provide unbiased information on controversial issues and guarantee neutrality, aiming to prevent the spread of misinformation or social confusion through expert scientific views.
First Vice Science Minister Koo Hyuk-chae supported this perspective, highlighting that the SMCK will enhance the public's understanding and trust in scientific technologies by aiding the media in delivering science-based information to the public. Koo expressed hope that the center will serve as a communication channel linking science technology, the press, and the public.
