Seoul: Samsung SDI Co., a major South Korean battery manufacturer, announced that it has signed a multiyear agreement with Mercedes-Benz Group AG to supply electric vehicle (EV) batteries for the German automaker. The agreement was formalized at a ceremony held in Seoul, attended by Samsung SDI Chief Executive Officer Choi Joo-Sun and Mercedes-Benz Chairman and CEO Ola Kallenius, along with other senior executives from both companies.
According to Yonhap News Agency, under the new deal, Samsung SDI will supply high-performance batteries specifically designed for Mercedes-Benz's next-generation EVs. This agreement marks the first EV battery supply collaboration between the two companies. The nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries, which will be provided by Samsung SDI, are noted for their high energy density, longer driving range, extended lifespan, and strong output. The batteries are also equipped with Samsung SDI's proprietary safety technologies, ensuring enhanced security and performance.
Mercedes-Benz plans to incorporate these advanced batteries into its upcoming compact and midsize electric SUVs and coupe models. This move is part of its broader strategy to capture the next-generation EV market. In addition to the supply agreement, the companies have agreed to expand their cooperation in future mobility areas, including a joint development of next-generation battery technologies.
A Samsung SDI official emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating, "This partnership brings together the innovative DNA of both companies. It is meaningful in that Samsung SDI has secured a battery order aimed at strengthening its position in the global EV market."
