Samsung SDI Secures U.S. Battery Supply Contract, Potentially for Tesla Energy Storage Systems

Seoul: Samsung SDI Co. announced that its U.S. subsidiary has secured a battery supply contract, though specifics remain undisclosed. The deal is believed to be associated with Tesla Inc.'s energy storage system (ESS) business.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean battery manufacturer stated that details regarding the contract, such as the financial terms, business partner, and duration, are being withheld for business confidentiality. Samsung SDI plans to reveal more information by January 2030.

This recent regulatory filing comes on the heels of a November 2025 announcement where Samsung SDI suggested ongoing negotiations to supply battery products to Tesla. The prior disclosure was prompted by a Korea Exchange inquiry following media reports suggesting that the company was set to provide batteries for Tesla's ESS operations, potentially valued at 3 trillion won (approximately US$2.08 billion).

An industry expert noted that the demand for ESS is on the rise, driven by significant growth within the artificial intelligence sector. Samsung SDI appears to be capitalizing on this demand by securing contracts through its demonstrated performance, safety, and cost advantages in the ESS market.
