Giheung: Samsung Electronics Co., renowned as the world's largest memory chipmaker, announced the commencement of its new semiconductor research and development (R and D) complex near Seoul with a tool-in ceremony. This event marked the installation of the first batch of equipment at the NRD-K complex located at its Giheung campus in Yongin, south of Seoul, highlighting a pivotal transition from construction to manufacturing readiness. According to Yonhap News Agency, the NRD-K complex, which began construction in 2022, spans approximately 109,000 square meters. It is envisaged as a comprehensive R and D hub for Samsung's memory, system large scale integration, and foundry semiconductor divisions. The facility is projected to commence operations by mid-2025, with an investment plan of 20 trillion won (US$14.3 billion) by 2030. The state-of-the-art center will be equipped with advanced production tools, including high Numerical Aperture extreme ultraviolet lithography machines, enabling finer and more precis e chip patterning. Additionally, an advanced wafer bonding infrastructure is slated for installation, enhancing the facility's capabilities. During the ceremony, Vice Chairman Hun Young-hyun emphasized the strategic importance of NRD-K, stating, "NRD-K will bolster our development speed, enabling the company to create a virtuous cycle to accelerate fundamental research on next-generation technology and mass production." He further expressed a vision for Giheung to lay the foundation for Samsung Electronics' next century of innovation, building on its 50-year legacy in semiconductors. The Giheung campus is historically significant as the birthplace of the world's first 64-megabit DRAM in 1992, which established Samsung's leadership in the global semiconductor market. Through the establishment of the new R and D facility, Samsung aims to nurture a hub for semiconductor ecology and technological innovation, reinforcing its position at the forefront of the industry.
