Changwon: The son of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong was commissioned as a Navy officer after completing 11 weeks of training as an officer candidate. Lee Jee-ho, 24, joined 89 other new Navy and Marine Corps officers in a commissioning ceremony at the Naval Academy in Changwon, located about 380 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ceremony was attended by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Kang Dong-gil and the families of the newly appointed officers, including Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong. Although the Samsung chief was unable to attend his son's training commencement ceremony in September, he was present at the commissioning event to personally attach an ensign's rank insignia to his son.

Lee Jee-ho, who was born in the United States in 2000, made the significant decision to renounce his U.S. citizenship in order to fulfill his military duty as an officer. During the commissioning ceremony, he led the cadets as a representative of his class. Navy officials noted that he got along well with his fellow cadets during training and was actively engaged. Lee is set to serve as an interpreter officer in the Navy.
