Pyongyang: North Korea has engaged in friendly football and ice hockey matches with Russia as part of bilateral sports exchanges, state media reported. This development comes as the two nations continue to expand their ties following North Korea's deployment of troops to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine.

According to Yonhap News Agency, North Korea's national women's football team emerged victorious over Russia with a 5-2 scoreline during their friendly match at Kim Il Sung Stadium. The match, held the previous day, was attended by workers, athletes, football fans, and members of the Russian Embassy in North Korea. The Korean Central News Agency described the event as an opportunity to enhance the friendship between North Korean and Russian athletes and to develop their football skills.

Additionally, North Korean media reported an ice hockey match between North Korean and Russian athletes under the age of 17. This match took place in North Korea on Wednesday, with the Russian team visiting Pyongyang at the invitation of the North Korean sports ministry. These events highlight the ongoing sports collaboration between the two countries.

Since the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia in June last year, North Korea has deployed troops to Russia to assist in its war with Ukraine, while also expanding cooperation across other sectors. In November last year, the two countries signed a protocol aimed at enhancing sports exchanges, which included plans for hosting joint sports events.
