Seoul: South Korea's spy agency indicated that a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un could be imminent, citing potential signs of dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) shared this assessment during a closed-door briefing with the National Assembly's intelligence committee. Representatives Youn Kun-young of the ruling Democratic Party and Yoo Yeong-ha of the main opposition People Power Party were present at the briefing. The NIS suggested that while no concrete dialogue between North Korea and the U.S. has been confirmed, there are emerging signs of communication. Trump has expressed his desire to meet with Kim Jong-un later this year, though Pyongyang has yet to respond directly, continuing to criticize what it perceives as the U.S.'s hostile policy toward the North.

The NIS also addressed President Lee Jae Myung's proposal for the two Koreas to begin discussions on formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War. The agency reported that it has not made any contact with North Korea regarding this proposal. The Korean Peninsula remains technically at war since the Korean War concluded with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

Regarding Kim Jong-un's daughter, Ju-ae, the NIS noted her frequent appearances in North Korean media, suggesting she may be positioned as Kim's successor. The agency believes this media exposure is intended to establish her image as a leader among the North Korean populace. North Korean state media had previously released photos of Ju-ae accompanying Kim at significant events, including the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War armistice.

The NIS informed lawmakers that it is currently analyzing "internal documents" from North Korea's ruling Workers' Party of Korea and "missile blueprints." The agency also launched an internal inspection into former President Yoon Suk Yeol's 2024 martial law bid, probing allegations that a task force on North Korea surveilled politicians and civilians unrelated to the North.
