Seoul: The South Korean won surged to a nearly 14-month high against the U.S. dollar on Thursday, influenced by the strengthening of the Japanese yen. At 3:30 p.m., the won was valued at 1,359.3 won per dollar, marking an increase of 9.4 won from the previous trading session's close.
According to Yonhap News Agency, this is the first time since July 3 of the previous year that the won has surpassed the 1,360 per dollar threshold. During morning trading, the Korean currency briefly reached 1,355.9 per dollar, reflecting its significant rise.
The appreciation of the won is attributed to market expectations surrounding potential intervention by Japan's financial authorities to bolster the yen, which has reached its highest point since August 7. Additionally, local exporters have continued selling dollars as the U.S. currency remains weak in anticipation of an upcoming U.S. employment report.
