Taipei: A South Korean student was stabbed in a shopping district of Taipei but the injury is not life-threatening, according to Taiwanese news reports Sunday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the student, identified only by his surname Shin, was transferred to a hospital for treatment after being attacked by a knife-wielding man in Taipei's Ximending neighborhood at 6:22 a.m. on Saturday. Shin reported on his social media account that the attack was carried out by a stranger.
Around 30 minutes after the incident, police arrested a Taiwanese man in his 30s who had driven away from the scene. The attacker, believed to be intoxicated, reportedly claimed he brought a knife from his car and used it to vent his anger following a quarrel with three South Korean students. Police have referred the suspect to the prosecution on charges of attempted murder.
The South Korean Mission in Taiwan has been providing consular assistance since becoming aware of the incident, according to South Korea's foreign ministry. It dispatched a consul to the hospital's emergency room and called for the Taiwanese police to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into the incident.
