Seoul: South Korea, the United States, and Japan are set to conduct a trilateral military exercise off South Korea's southern coast early next month, as confirmed by Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) on Friday. The collaborative exercise, dubbed Freedom Edge, is scheduled from September 7 to 11 in international waters east and south of Jeju Island.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the JCS emphasized that the exercise is defensive in nature and forms part of the annual efforts by the three nations to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile threats while ensuring regional peace and stability. This announcement follows a recent reduction in the bilateral Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise by South Korea and the U.S., initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump as a conciliatory gesture towards North Korea.
The decision to proceed with the trilateral exercise with Tokyo had been under scrutiny, especially after the UFS drills were scaled down. The U.S. Pacific Command informed Yonhap News Agency earlier this week that coordination among the three countries was underway to prepare for Freedom Edge, indicating that the exercise will proceed as planned.
Pyongyang has consistently criticized military drills involving South Korea and the U.S., viewing them as invasion rehearsals, despite the allies' assertions of their defensive intent. President Trump had previously directed the Pentagon to adjust the UFS, arguing that the drills could convey an "inappropriate and hostile" message to Pyongyang, amidst efforts to renew dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The participation of key U.S. military assets in this year's Freedom Edge remains uncertain. Notably, last year's drills took place without a U.S. aircraft carrier for the first time since the exercise's inception, as U.S. carrier strike groups were allocated to the Middle East.
The Freedom Edge exercise is a notable result of the trilateral Camp David summit held in August 2023, highlighting an advancement in the institutionalization of three-way security cooperation between the U.S. and its Asian allies. Previous Freedom Edge exercises were conducted in June and November 2024, and in September of the preceding year.
