Seoul: The South Korean government has announced its intention to construct two new nuclear reactors by the year 2038, aligning with public support amid increasing demand for clean energy. Climate Minister Kim Sung-whan confirmed the plan during a press briefing on the 12th basic plan for electricity supply and demand, which outlines the country's energy strategy for the period from 2026 to 2040.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the government is set to undertake necessary procedures to ensure the completion of these large-scale nuclear reactors between 2037 and 2038. This plan is a continuation of the 11th basic plan established by the previous administration. Minister Kim emphasized the critical need to address climate change by reducing carbon emissions across various sectors, particularly by decreasing reliance on coal and liquefied natural gas for power generation.

Kim highlighted the importance of transitioning to power systems that focus on renewable energy and nuclear power to achieve these reductions. Recent government-conducted public opinion polls revealed that approximately 80 percent of respondents believe nuclear power is essential, with 60 percent supporting the plan for additional reactor construction.
