Gyeryong: South Korea is set to commemorate the 78th anniversary of its armed forces' founding with a ceremony at the runway of the military headquarters in Gyeryongdae next month, as announced by the defense ministry on Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Armed Forces Day event will take place on October 1 in Gyeryong, approximately 145 kilometers south of Seoul. The ceremony is expected to involve around 4,000 troops. In conjunction with this event, the government plans to host several cultural activities, including the Army's largest cultural festival, scheduled from October 1 to October 5.

This year's observance will include an exhibition showcasing homegrown weapons systems integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The defense ministry has indicated that there will be a conscious effort to minimize the deployment of troops and equipment, foregoing the traditional military parade. This marks a departure from the previous Yoon Suk Yeol administration, which organized grand military parades in consecutive years, notably in 2024.
