Seoul: South Korea will try to host a drug response center of the International Criminal Police Organization, or Interpol, in an effort to help tackle transnational crimes involving drugs, the office for government policy coordination said Wednesday. The government aims to launch the center around the time when a general assembly of Interpol takes place in Seoul in 2029.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the need is being raised for an international control tower to strategically block the 'golden triangle' region that produces 70 percent of drugs worldwide. This statement was released after a meeting of the committee on anti-drug measures, presided over by Government Policy Coordination Minister Yoon Chang-yul. The golden triangle refers to a region bordering Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos.
The National Police Agency will push for a letter of intent with Interpol at December's Interpol general assembly.
