S. Korea Restarts Operation of Gori-2 Nuclear Reactor After Three-Year Hiatus

Busan: South Korea restarted the Gori-2 reactor on Saturday, marking a significant return to operation after a three-year suspension for safety checks and facility improvements, as reported by the country's nuclear reactor operator.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the nuclear reactor at the Gori Nuclear Power Plant, situated in Busan, 325 kilometers southeast of Seoul, began its commercial operations in April 1983 as South Korea's third nuclear reactor. However, the reactor's 40-year operational permit expired in April 2023, leading to a suspension of its operations. This pause was necessary for conducting extensive safety inspections and implementing essential improvements before the facility was permitted to resume operations.

The Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co., responsible for operating the reactor, secured permission last November to restart the nuclear reactor. The successful resumption of the Gori-2 reactor underscores South Korea's continued commitment to utilizing nuclear energy within its energy mix.
