Seoul: Defense Minister nominee Ahn Gyu-back announced South Korea's intention to reclaim wartime command of its troops from the United States within the tenure of President Lee Jae Myung. Ahn's declaration came during a parliamentary confirmation hearing, aligning with Lee's campaign promise and amidst U.S. President Donald Trump's call for allies to assume more security responsibilities.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Ahn noted the substantial progress made by the South Korean military in meeting the conditions necessary for the Operational Control (OPCON) transfer, a process that has been under evaluation since 2006. This transfer depends on South Korea's ability to lead combined forces, enhance its strike and air defense capabilities, and ensure a favorable regional security environment. Initially planned for 2015, the OPCON transfer was delayed due to escalating threats from North Korea.
Ahn expressed his commitment to supporting the government's efforts to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula and improve relations with North Korea. He emphasized maintaining strong military deterrence while keeping dialogue channels open to reduce tensions and foster trust. Despite advocating for engagement, Ahn identified North Korea as South Korea's primary adversary and supported ongoing joint drills with the U.S.
The stance of Ahn contrasts with that of Unification Minister nominee Chung Dong-young, who recently questioned the characterization of North Korea as the main enemy and suggested reassessing the scale of joint drills. Ahn also proposed a gradual approach to restoring an inter-Korean military tension reduction agreement.
As the first civilian defense minister nominee in 64 years, Ahn pledged to restore public trust in the military and uphold political neutrality. He aims to rectify past administration errors, such as the alleged illegal martial law imposition by former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is currently on trial.
Ahn outlined the challenges faced by the military, including global security uncertainties, evolving warfare due to advanced technology, and the strategic alignment of North Korea with China and Russia. In response, he promised to enhance defense cooperation through the South Korea-U.S. alliance and trilateral efforts with Japan.
