Seoul: South Korea is closely monitoring the latest developments in the Middle East after the United States announced a blockade of all maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports following failed peace talks, Cheong Wa Dae said Monday. Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung stated that the government is keeping a close watch on the situation after President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Navy would block all ships from entering or leaving the crucial shipping lane, effective at 10 a.m. Eastern time, or 11 p.m. in Korea.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kang emphasized the importance of international maritime transportation and the freedom of navigation, which are interests of all nations protected under international law. "We hope for the swift normalization of global maritime logistics networks," Kang told reporters, underscoring the significance of stable maritime operations.

Kang also mentioned that the government is actively exploring measures to ensure security in light of the developments in the Middle East. When questioned about the potential impact of the U.S. blockade on energy supplies, Kang acknowledged that economic ripple effects could persist even if the U.S. and Iran reach an agreement to end the conflict. The government is reportedly preparing measures to mitigate the impact on the economy.
