Seoul: The foreign ministry announced on Friday its decision to implement a travel ban on most parts of Niger, citing an increased security threat targeting foreigners.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the travel ban represents the highest Level 4 in a four-tier travel warning system and is set to take effect on Saturday. The ban applies to all regions of Niger, with the exception of the capital city, Niamey, which is currently under a Level 3 travel advisory.

The decision follows a rise in incidents involving threats to foreigners in the West African country. This includes a recent case where an American missionary was kidnapped by an armed robber. The foreign ministry emphasized the increased risk of kidnapping by terrorist groups as a significant factor in their decision.

Individuals who choose to travel to areas under the travel ban may face legal repercussions unless they obtain approval for special purposes. The ministry's move aims to safeguard citizens amid escalating security concerns in the region.
