Seoul: A government delegation from South Korea attended the inauguration ceremony for a significant international initiative launched by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Washington, D.C., as announced by the science ministry on Wednesday. The event, which spans two days and concludes on Thursday (U.S. time), was organized to celebrate the launch of the Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea, or ATLAS. This global initiative aims to support the deployment of nuclear-powered vessels and floating reactors, marking a pivotal development in maritime technology.

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea has identified small modular reactors (SMRs) as one of the country's seven future technology drivers. The nation has set a goal to develop SMR-powered vessels by 2035, underscoring its commitment to advancing nuclear technology in maritime applications. The delegation representing South Korea includes Koo Hyuk-chae, the first vice minister of science and ICT, along with officials from the industry ministry and representatives from local companies. This participation highlights South Korea's active engagement in the global nuclear technology landscape and its pursuit of innovative energy solutions.
