Seoul: South Korea and China are actively engaging in discussions regarding a potential visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Seoul, officials announced on Tuesday. In January, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun expressed his intention to meet with Wang Yi in the first quarter of the year, suggesting the possibility of Wang traveling to Seoul. However, this meeting has not yet occurred.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's foreign ministry highlighted that the two nations have maintained close working-level consultations concerning exchanges between their foreign ministers. The ministry expressed their welcome for Wang's potential visit as a part of the follow-up measures to implement agreements achieved during the South Korea-China summit.
These statements followed reports from local media indicating that both countries are discussing the specifics of Wang's possible trip to South Korea, which could happen as early as next month. The Chinese Embassy in Seoul also confirmed that both sides are communicating through diplomatic channels regarding this issue.
"Both sides are looking forward to Wang's visit to South Korea and will continue to communicate through diplomatic channels," the embassy noted in a statement sent to Yonhap News Agency. If the visit materializes, it would represent the latest high-level diplomatic exchange between Seoul and Beijing, as both countries aim to maintain communication and follow up on agreements reached during their leaders' meetings.
Wang Yi's last visit to South Korea was in November 2023, when he attended a trilateral foreign ministers' meeting involving South Korea, China, and Japan.
