Gumi: The state arms procurement agency has initiated a project to renovate the Navy's 4,400-ton warships using homegrown technology to improve the efficiency of the fleet, officials announced Wednesday. A meeting to discuss the specifics of the upgrade for the Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin-class destroyers was held at the office of defense firm Hanhwa Systems in Gumi, located 233 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) plans to equip the 4,400-ton warships with a domestically developed combat system, an upgraded towed array sonar, and guided missile equipment to enhance the warships' anti-submarine and air defense capabilities. This plan aims to integrate advanced technologies to optimize the operational and maintenance efficiencies of these naval assets.
Commissioned in 2003, the 4,400-ton class destroyers play a crucial role in the Navy. DAPA anticipates that the upgrades will significantly contribute to maintaining and improving the operational readiness of these essential maritime defense resources.
