S. Korea and U.S. Discuss Uranium Enrichment in Security Talks

Seoul: South Korea and the United States continued discussions on their security agreements for the second consecutive day, focusing on Seoul's pursuit of uranium enrichment and spent nuclear fuel reprocessing capabilities for peaceful purposes.

According to Yonhap News Agency, wednesday marked the conclusion of a two-day meeting that commenced on Tuesday. The allies engaged in bilateral consultations to advance agreements established during an October summit between the leaders of the two countries last year. The discussions are centered around a joint fact sheet where the U.S. committed to supporting processes for uranium enrichment and spent nuclear fuel reprocessing for civilian use, alongside Seoul's initiative to develop conventionally armed nuclear-propelled submarines.

The U.S. delegation, led by Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker, arrived in Seoul on Monday for these discussions. Accompanying Hooker were officials including Ivan Kanapathy, senior director for Asia at the National Security Council, and Matthew Napoli, deputy administrator for defense nuclear nonproliferation at the National Nuclear Security Administration.
