Paju: The veterans ministry of South Korea has taken a significant step by signing a preliminary agreement with India's defense ministry to honor Indian veterans who served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 as medical personnel. This agreement was formalized by Veteran Minister Kwon Oh-eul and India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at a memorial in Imjingak, Paju, dedicated to India's contributions to the war.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the memorandum of understanding outlines collaboration between the two nations on various veterans' projects. These include exchange programs for descendants of Korean War veterans, along with academic and cultural initiatives that emphasize India's role in the war. Furthermore, there are plans to establish memorial facilities as part of this bilateral cooperation.
The signing ceremony was followed by the unveiling of the first memorial in South Korea, specifically recognizing India's role in the Korean War. During the conflict, India sent 627 medical personnel to a field hospital, marking the largest contingent of medical aid from any country to South Korea during the war.
