Seoul: South Korea has signed an initial agreement on sharing passenger name record (PNR) data with the European Union (EU), marking the first deal of its kind by an Asian nation, the customs agency announced Monday. This agreement represents a significant step for South Korea in aligning its crime response system with those of advanced nations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korea Customs Service explained that PNR data encompasses the date of ticket issuance, flight itineraries, accompanying travelers, and baggage information. These elements are crucial for screening high-risk travelers at international borders. Previously, the sharing of such information with EU authorities was restricted due to personal data protection regulations.

The customs agency highlighted that only a limited number of countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, have similar agreements with the EU. The agency noted that this development positions South Korea alongside these nations in establishing a comprehensive crime response framework. The agreement is expected to enhance South Korea's ability to combat the smuggling of hazardous materials, such as drugs and firearms.

Efforts are underway by South Korea and the EU to officially implement the agreement in the first half of 2027, as stated by the Korea Customs Service.
