Daegu: The ruling Democratic Party (DP) has announced former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum as its sole candidate for the position of Daegu mayor in the forthcoming local elections scheduled for June 3. This decision was made public on Friday as the party aims to challenge the traditional conservative dominance in the city.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the DP's nomination committee revealed that Kim was selected unanimously, reflecting the party's strategy to strengthen its position in a region historically aligned with conservative values. Kim Yi-soo, chairperson of the nomination committee, emphasized Kim's representation of the DP's commitment to addressing regionalism.
Kim Boo-kyum's political experience is substantial, having served as a four-term lawmaker, the interior minister, and the prime minister from 2021 to 2022 under former President Moon Jae-in. His candidacy is seen as a significant move by the DP to leverage his extensive political background and leadership skills to gain influence in Daegu.
Kim's connection to Daegu is not new; he hails from Sangju, a neighboring area, and has previously made an unsuccessful bid for the Daegu mayoralty in 2014. However, in 2016, he secured a parliamentary seat in a crucial district within the city, indicating his persistent efforts and connection to the region.
