Ruling Party to Introduce Special Counsel Bill to Probe Yoon’s Insurrection Charges

Seoul: The ruling People Power Party (PPP) announced its decision to introduce its own bill for a special counsel probe into impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law bid, opposing an opposition-led bill. This was revealed by PPP floor leader Kweon Seong-dong during a press conference at the National Assembly, where he stated the PPP's firm stance against the main opposition Democratic Party's (DP) "unconstitutional" bill, which had passed the National Assembly's legislation and judiciary committee.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the PPP plans to propose a special counsel probe bill focusing on the martial law imposition, explicitly excluding elements they deem unconstitutional. Opposition parties have been attempting to pass a revised bill after a previous one failed in the National Assembly by a narrow margin. The DP's new proposal suggests that the Supreme Court's chief justice should recommend a special counsel to investigate Yoon's allegations, aiming to attract more defection votes from the PPP.

The DP's bill includes allegations of treason and an attempt to incite war by Yoon, which the ruling party has strongly criticized. The PPP plans to omit such allegations in their version of the bill. Kweon Seong-dong also called on the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials to pause its efforts to execute an arrest warrant against Yoon until the PPP's bill is passed by the Assembly.
