Ruling Party Elects New Floor Leader Amid Political Tensions

SEOUL: The People Power Party (PPP) has elected Kweon Seong-dong, a pro-Yoon lawmaker, as its new floor leader following a tumultuous period marked by martial law and political discord. Kweon, a five-term legislator and close ally of President Yoon Suk Yeol, succeeds Rep. Choo Kyung-ho, who resigned after the National Assembly's failure to pass an impeachment motion against President Yoon. According to Yonhap News Agency, the opposition has levied serious charges against Choo, including insurrection and other violations. They accuse him of collaborating with President Yoon and allege that he obstructed the parliamentary vote intended to lift the martial law. The election of Kweon as floor leader comes at a time of heightened political tension, with the ruling party grappling with internal and external challenges. His leadership is expected to play a significan t role in navigating the PPP through the ongoing political crisis.
