Seoul: The leaders of both the ruling and main opposition parties in South Korea have suspended their campaign activities after a tragic incident involving the partial collapse of an overpass in western Seoul, which resulted in the death of at least three individuals.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Rep. Jung Chung-rae, the leader of the ruling Democratic Party (DP), was scheduled to attend a campaign event in Andong, located approximately 190 kilometers southeast of Seoul. However, he canceled his appearance and expressed his concerns on Facebook, urging authorities to prioritize rescue efforts. He announced that he was returning to Seoul to address the situation.
Similarly, Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok, the chief of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), announced during a campaign rally in western Seoul that he would also suspend his campaign activities for the remainder of the day. In a show of solidarity and concern, Seoul mayoral candidates have also put a pause on their election campaigns in response to the incident.
Chong Won-o, the DP's candidate for Seoul mayor, emphasized the importance of swift rescue operations and urged authorities to prevent further damage. He announced his intention to visit the accident site immediately. Incumbent Mayor Oh Se-hoon of the PPP echoed these sentiments, halting his campaign to inspect the site and stressing the importance of citizen safety. He called for thorough investigations and the utilization of all available resources to respond effectively to the accident.
The collapse of the Seosomun Overpass occurred at 2:32 p.m. during its scheduled removal work, which was set to be completed by early next month. Officials confirmed that at least three fatalities have resulted from the incident.
