Rival Parties Respond as Ex-President Yoon Arrested Over Martial Law

Seoul: Rival political parties showed mixed responses Thursday as former President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested again over his failed martial law bid. Yoon was placed in custody earlier in the day after the Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant requested by a special counsel, citing concerns that the former president could destroy evidence.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Rep. Park Sang-hyuck, a spokesperson for the ruling Democratic Party (DP), said the disgraced former president's detention was a decision based on "common sense" that upholds justice. "There was no way out for Yoon given the charges stated in the arrest warrant, including obstructing the National Assembly's vote, abusing power to block the execution of an arrest warrant and destroying evidence by deleting records from secure phones," Park said. DP floor leader Kim Byung-kee also urged the special counsel to fully investigate Yoon for any additional crimes and called on the court to hand down the harshest sentence possible.

Meanwhile, the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) expressed regret over the court's decision to rearrest Yoon. "We are deeply sorry for the unfortunate rearrest of a former president," Rep. Song Eon-seog, floor leader of the PPP, told reporters after a party meeting. Song also called for a "fair and just" investigation and trial that is "in accordance with the law and principles."

The special counsel team, led by Cho Eun-suk, sought the warrant on five key charges, including Yoon's alleged violation of the rights of Cabinet members by calling only a select few to a meeting held shortly before he declared martial law on Dec. 3. Yoon was first arrested in January when he was still in office, though he was released in March after a court accepted his request to cancel his arrest.
