Seoul: Sales at major retailers in South Korea rose by 9 percent in May compared to the previous year, data revealed on Wednesday, driven by improving consumer sentiment and increased revenues at both online and offline platforms. The rise in sales was also supported by significant holidays, including Children's Day and Parents' Day.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources reported a 9 percent increase in retail sales from the previous year. Offline retailers experienced a 9.3 percent rise in sales, with department stores and convenience stores leading the surge. The ministry attributed this strong performance to an increase in foreign tourists and an early summer heat wave that boosted beverage sales.
Meanwhile, revenue at major online retail platforms grew by 8.8 percent in May compared to the previous year. This growth was consistent across categories such as food, electronics, and children's products. Online platforms made up 58.6 percent of total retail sales in May.
