Renault Targets Korean Market Expansion with Electrification Strategy

Seoul: Renault Group aims to expand its lineup, increase market share, and accelerate electrification in South Korea, Renault Group's Chairman Francois Provost has stated. Provost made the remarks during a press meeting in Seoul, emphasizing the group's readiness to push its expansion efforts beyond Europe, including the Korean market. According to Yonhap News Agency, Renault Korea Motors Co. is set to play a pivotal role as a manufacturing base to cater to both domestic and export demands under the group's "Future Ready" strategy. This strategy aims for global sales of at least 2 million vehicles by 2030, focusing on electrification and lineup expansion. Renault Korea's manufacturing facility in Busan has emerged as a production hub for D- and E-segment vehicles and all-electric models. Renault Group's plans include making electrified vehicles the entirety of their new models by 2030, with pure electric vehicles (EVs) comprising 50 percent of annual production and hybrids forming the remainder. Of the 22 n ew models planned by then, 16 will be electrified. In line with this strategy, Provost mentioned that Renault Korea is assessing timelines and details for upgrading its Busan plant for EV production. Provost remarked on the customer transition to EVs, suggesting that once customers experience electric vehicles, they do not return to internal combustion engines, positioning electric cars as Renault's core business. To offer competitively priced EVs in South Korea, Renault intends to collaborate with local partners, including LG Energy Solution Ltd. and POSCO. In the first quarter of the year, Renault Korea's sales decreased by 8.5 percent from the previous year to 16,620 units, attributed to weak domestic demand.
