Seoul: The data protection regulator has initiated an investigation into major wireless carriers KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp. over potential leaks of customer data. This action follows reports of unauthorized mobile payments affecting KT users.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) disclosed its intention to examine the two carriers after media reports highlighted suspicions of data breaches. The regulator emphasized that, although the companies have not reported any personal data leaks, the investigation aims to uncover the specific circumstances of the incident and verify whether personal data was compromised. This probe was prompted by requests from civic groups and reports from victims of unauthorized payments.

As of 6 p.m. on Tuesday, KT users had reported 124 cases of unauthorized mobile payments since August 27, resulting in damages totaling 80.6 million won (US$58,000), as reported by the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police. These incidents have predominantly occurred in Seoul's southwestern ward of Geumcheon and the nearby cities of Gwangmyeong and Bucheon, with additional cases emerging in Incheon and Gwacheon.

The police are collaborating with KT to investigate the situation. Furthermore, the science ministry has established a special team to delve into the unauthorized mobile payments.
